Tips for Sewing with Minky Fabric

I recently shared a tutorial for a Cozy Button Scarf at SIY – Sew It Yourself! The scarf fit close to the next and features a print fabric on the outside and a warm Cuddle fabric on the inside. Here’s what it looks like during assembly!

This got me thinking about Cuddle Fabric, also known as minky fabric. If you’ve never sewn with this plush, extra-thick fabric, you are in for a treat! I love to use this fabric on quilt backs, especially mini quilts that I want to hang on the wall (it can easily replace a layer of batting if you’re just looking to quilt some wall art). This is actually how I finished my Home State Home quilts that I demonstrated on Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting years ago.

While I was filming on the set, host Sara Gallegos and I went over some helpful tips for sewing with plush fabric! To help tame the mess, we used a lint roller right over the edge of the cut fabric.

Check out this video to see how easily this picks up all of the mess so it doesn’t end up on your sewing table or floor!

I sewed this project on my Baby Lock Ballad, which features automatic threading, push-button thread cutting, speed control, and a large throat space. It’s a dream machine, for sure!

If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly sewing machine, I highly recommend the Zest (low price-point, basic options), the Brilliant (a step up from the Zest that has more options for sewists), and the Lyric (a fabulous machine and a great investment to make if you want to put some muscle into your sewing hobby)! To find out which one is right for you, just visit your local Baby Lock retailer.
