When I first got my driver’s license at age 17, I remember the little joys of picking out car accessories. A steering wheel cover, fuzzy dice, air fresheners… it was all so new and fun and fabulous. Over the years—and perhaps now that driving is more about being a chauffeur for my son to and from school and activities—having a car has become less “fun” but it is still necessary.

I thought it was time to resurrect the car decorating habit with a new, fancy steering wheel cover! As a bonus, this quilted cover will keep my hands warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You don’t need to be an expert sewist to make this project. In fact, if you can sew a straight line, you can make this project!

I’ve added a non-slip shelf liner to the inside of this steering wheel, which is my number one tip for sewing this project! It doesn’t take much effort to add that extra layer, and you can pick up shelf liner at most dollar stores. I found this fun fabric print from the Spread the Word collection by Kathryn Kramer Waters for The Blank Quilting Corp. I just love it!

Sew Wine Bottle Gift Bags for the Holidays https://lindsaysews.com/sew-wine-bottle-gift-bags-for-the-holidays/ https://lindsaysews.com/sew-wine-bottle-gift-bags-for-the-holidays/#respond Wed, 22 Oct 2025 18:05:56 +0000 https://lindsaysews.com/?p=1098 What do you get for the person who has everything? Wine! How do you make it a little more thoughtful? Check out my new free sewing tutorial for this Wine Bottle Bag at SIY Sew It Yourself!

Below you can see the “Christmas” side of the two wine bottle bags I sewed…. I used the Vibrant Botanica collection by Kitty McCall for FreeSpirit Fabrics for this project.

And here’s the “anytime”/party side! I love the bold floral designs and especially the pop of yellow—I knew right away I wanted to use both of these prints.

When I was looking around at the various existing designs for wine bottle bags, I didn’t see any that fit just what I was looking for. I like this bottle bag because it is completely reversible and it is also padded to protect your bottles during transport. Lovely! I also used upcycled leather straps from a thrifted purse for the handles. I’m so glad I remembered about that purse, because I think the size and color of the straps was just perfect to give these wine bottle bags an elegant touch!

Upcycle Jeans Into Cute Shorts with Fabric Ties https://lindsaysews.com/upcycle-jeans-into-cute-shorts-with-fabric-ties/ https://lindsaysews.com/upcycle-jeans-into-cute-shorts-with-fabric-ties/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 15:07:44 +0000 https://lindsaysews.com/?p=1091

If you’ve got a pair of jeans hiding in the back of your closet—maybe they’re too short, worn at the knees, or just not getting the love they deserve—don’t toss them just yet! With a little creativity, you can give them a brand-new look and add a fun twist to your wardrobe.

This beginner-friendly sewing refashion transforms full-length jeans into adorable cuffed shorts with a playful side knot. All it takes is a half yard of quilting cotton, your trusty sewing machine, and about an afternoon of crafting time. The end result? A custom, one-of-a-kind pair of shorts you’ll love wearing all season long.

In this free tutorial, I share an easy method for creating a fabric cuff that’s as stylish as it is simple to make. This version uses a straightforward approach to finishing the cuff—perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a quick, satisfying project.

I used prints from the Sweet Bees collection by Barb Tourtillotte for Henry Glass Fabrics. The floral and geometric designs are perfect for adding a touch of charm and personality to your finished look, but you can choose any fabric that coordinates with your jeans.

It’s a great way to use up fabric scraps or showcase a favorite print, and because the project is so quick, you might find yourself making more than one pair. Bonus: there’s even a coordinating patchwork zipper pouch idea at the end of the tutorial so you can make a matching accessory.

Ready to give your old jeans a new lease on life? Grab your fabric, plug in your sewing machine, and follow along with the full, step-by-step instructions here:

Upcycle Jeans to Shorts with a Fabric Cuff – Full Tutorial

As always, I sewed both the shorts and the coordinating pouch on my Baby Lock sewing machine, which made the whole process smooth, speedy, and so much more enjoyable! If you are looking to upgrade your sewing machine, I cannot recommend Baby Lock enough. I sewed this project on my Baby Lock Ballad, and I’ve also enjoyed sewing with several different models of their sewing machines. They even make some models for beginners that start at a fraction of the cost!

Cat Tunnel Sewing Tutorial with Recycled Materials https://lindsaysews.com/cat-tunnel-sewing-tutorial-recycled-materials/ https://lindsaysews.com/cat-tunnel-sewing-tutorial-recycled-materials/#respond Fri, 11 Jul 2025 18:11:15 +0000 https://lindsaysews.com/?p=1082

Recently, I designed a sewing project almost completely from recycled materials, and I’m excited to share it with you! In fact, the only new item was my fabric. I chose two prints from “Rough Around the Edges” by Funny Girl for Studio E Fabrics.

Do you ever struggle with having too many cardboard boxes around the house? I normally save the cardboard boxes until I have enough to take to the community recycling bins located at the public park. If you have a large box laying around, cut this cardboard into 3 pieces (13.5” x 21.5”) and save them a rainy day—that’s enough to make one cat tunnel.

How about that thick insulated filler that comes with refrigerated meals like Factor and Home Chef? I had stashed a lot of the insulated “batting” knowing I’m a crafter and I’d find a use for it somehow! Again, cut the batting into 3 pieces (13.5” x 21.5”). You can tape smaller sections together with packing tape to make them fit the pattern.

If you’re ready to sew this cat tunnel, I’m sharing the free sewing pattern over at SIY Sew It Yourself!

There are lots of recyclable items that you can use for sewing projects. Here are just a few ideas:

Cardboard boxes can be used to make false bottoms in tote bags.

Insulated batting can be used to make lunch bags and children’s play mats.

There are lots of recyclable items that you can use for sewing projects. Here are just a few ideas!

  • Cardboard boxes can be used to make false bottoms in tote bags.
  • Insulated batting from old lunch bags or delivery packaging can be reused to make new lunch totes, children’s play mats, or pot holders.
  • Old jeans can be cut into durable fabric pieces for quilts, bags, or even patchwork aprons.
  • Worn-out t-shirts can be turned into soft quilt blocks, braided rugs, or reusable shopping bags.
  • Plastic grocery bags can be fused together with an iron (using parchment paper) to create a waterproof lining for wet bags or cosmetic pouches.
  • Buttons, zippers, and fabric scraps from worn-out clothing can be salvaged and reused as embellishments or for mending other garments.
  • Even cereal boxes can be cut up and used as templates for quilting shapes or stabilizers for small fabric projects like bookmarks or journal covers.

Whether I’m sewing with new fabric or recycled materials, my Baby Lock Ballad sewing machine charges right through every project like a champ! I’m an ambassador for Baby Lock and I will never be able to go back to sewing with a lesser quality machine.

Spooky Halloween Zipper Keychain Pouches https://lindsaysews.com/spooky-halloween-zipper-keychain-pouches/ https://lindsaysews.com/spooky-halloween-zipper-keychain-pouches/#respond Thu, 26 Jun 2025 14:24:08 +0000 https://lindsaysews.com/?p=1075

Recently, I received some a new FreeSpirit Fabrics collection—Spooky Cute Halloween by Mary Engelbreit. I knew I wanted the prints to all stand on their own in a small project that would be cute for the spooky season. That’s when I came up with this tutorial!

These mini keychain pouches have a zipper closure and are fully lined, with a mini strap on the end that you can add some purse hardware—either a keyring or a lobster claw works well. Wouldn’t these make the sweetest teacher gifts with a little gift card tucked inside? I love them for clipping inside my purse for a bit of cash, lip balm, or card that you want to keep close. You could also sew up a set for all your friends!

Skills Learned: Machine sewing, zippers
Skill Level: Beginner
Finished Size: 4.5” x 3” (11.43cm x 7.62cm)
Fabric Requirements: 1/8 yard each main fabric and lining fabrics

Tips & Tricks

I wanted to share some tips I discovered when sewing these zipper pouches.

  1. First of all, don’t be afraid to turn your hand crank on the sewing machine when going over a zipper! You’re sewing through a lot of layers, so you want to go SLOW and avoid breaking a needle.
  2. Never underestimate the power of interfacing! I used ShapeFlex SF101 interfacing on the outer fabric layers, and it’s amazing what a difference it makes in the pressed pouch. It looks so professional!
  3. Keep sewing clips on hand for attaching zippers. They are so much easier than pins! Just clip, clip, clip…
  4. Finish sewing the lining of the pouch by machine. Yes, you could hand sew it closed. But it’ll be tucked inside, and you’ll be able to machine stitch it in a jiffy. I love this shortcut!
  5. Finally, when sewing a lined zipper pouch of any size, I have a fun method that I think you’ll love for attaching both sides to the zipper. You can read about it in the full tutorial. Yes, there are many ways to sew a lined zipper pouch, but this one makes so much sense and is easy for beginners! You’re gonna love it!

If you try this tutorial, I’d love to see your pouches! Tag me on Instagram @LindsaySews so I can admire them.

Lastly, if you need a sewing machine recommendation, I recommend Baby Lock. I’ve been an ambassador for Baby Lock sewing machines since 2013, and I absolutely adore every one I’ve stitched with! They are high-quality and let you focus on your creativity—not addressing sewing machine issues like skipped stitches. We’ve all been there, and it’s not pretty! I love that I don’t have to mess with any of that with my Baby Lock Ballad

5 Tips for Sewing a Baby Mobile from a Fabric Panel https://lindsaysews.com/5-tips-for-sewing-a-baby-mobile-from-a-fabric-panel/ https://lindsaysews.com/5-tips-for-sewing-a-baby-mobile-from-a-fabric-panel/#respond Fri, 25 Apr 2025 14:58:04 +0000 https://lindsaysews.com/?p=1060 If you’ve ever picked up a fabric panel and thought, “What else can I make with this besides a quilt or book?”—you’re not alone. Panels are packed with possibilities, and today I’m sharing one of my favorite ways to think outside the (quilt) block: a DIY baby mobile made from a fabric playmat panel!

This playful project originally appeared on Sew It Yourself, where I turned the Huggable and Loveable panel from Sandra Magsamen and Studio E Fabrics into a colorful nursery mobile. Whether you’re sewing for your own baby or a sweet shower gift, here are my top tips to make the process fun and frustration-free.

1. Look at Fabric Panels Differently

Just because a panel is labeled as a “book” or “playmat” doesn’t mean you have to stick with the original plan! Think of each design element on the panel as an appliqué waiting to happen. For this mobile, I used the cute animal-driven vehicles from the playmat—but you could just as easily cut out animals, letters, or shapes from other panels for similar results.

2. Sew with Dimension in Mind

Rather than fusing the fabric to something stiff, you’ll be turning these into soft, stuffed shapes. When cutting out your pieces, make sure you cut a front and a back for each shape. Then stitch them right sides together, leaving a small gap for turning and stuffing. A little fiber fill goes a long way in creating soft, huggable shapes that will gently sway in the air.

3. Embrace Hand Stitching for a Clean Finish

I know it can be tempting to close things up on the machine, but hand-stitching your shapes closed using a slip stitch will keep your project looking polished. The opening disappears right into the seam, and you won’t have to wrestle small, puffy shapes under your presser foot.

4. Add Visual Interest with Beads and PomPoms

Once your shapes are stuffed and stitched, it’s time to get creative with the details! I love stringing large wooden beads and colorful pompoms along the hanging strands. Not only does this add weight to help the mobile hang straight—it’s also just plain cute. Try spacing them a few inches apart for movement and color.

5. Use an Embroidery Hoop as Your Hanging Frame

Here’s a tip that keeps the whole project budget-friendly: use a 12” embroidery hoop as your mobile base! It’s lightweight, inexpensive, and super easy to work with. Secure your strands to the inner ring with a little clear tape before locking everything in place with the outer ring. Finish it off with a braided string for hanging, and you’ve got a custom nursery piece ready to gift or display!

This baby mobile is just one example of what’s possible when you reimagine a fabric panel. And the best part? When baby grows up, the little stuffed shapes can be reused for soft toy play or room decor!

Tips for Sewing with Minky Fabric https://lindsaysews.com/tips-for-sewing-with-minky-fabric/ https://lindsaysews.com/tips-for-sewing-with-minky-fabric/#respond Tue, 18 Feb 2025 13:54:38 +0000 https://lindsaysews.com/?p=1038

I recently shared a tutorial for a Cozy Button Scarf at SIY – Sew It Yourself! The scarf fit close to the next and features a print fabric on the outside and a warm Cuddle fabric on the inside. Here’s what it looks like during assembly!

This got me thinking about Cuddle Fabric, also known as minky fabric. If you’ve never sewn with this plush, extra-thick fabric, you are in for a treat! I love to use this fabric on quilt backs, especially mini quilts that I want to hang on the wall (it can easily replace a layer of batting if you’re just looking to quilt some wall art). This is actually how I finished my Home State Home quilts that I demonstrated on Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting years ago.

While I was filming on the set, host Sara Gallegos and I went over some helpful tips for sewing with plush fabric! To help tame the mess, we used a lint roller right over the edge of the cut fabric.

Check out this video to see how easily this picks up all of the mess so it doesn’t end up on your sewing table or floor!

Get the tutorial for the Cozy Button Scarf at SIY.

I sewed this project on my Baby Lock Ballad, which features automatic threading, push-button thread cutting, speed control, and a large throat space. It’s a dream machine, for sure!

If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly sewing machine, I highly recommend the Zest (low price-point, basic options), the Brilliant (a step up from the Zest that has more options for sewists), and the Lyric (a fabulous machine and a great investment to make if you want to put some muscle into your sewing hobby)!
